2014.11.04 – Election Day

I was up early and at my Roku bug again. I spent quite some time trying to get an event to show up on my test channel but it just wasn’t working at all. Peter suggested I just verify the event with a duration shows up locally on my laptop. I brought up the feed on my computer but the sample video didn’t have a duration of course. That meant I got to spend a good amount of time learning about databases. I haven’t really spent a lot of time messing with them but it wasn’t terribly awful to figure out how to log in to it and add a duration to my event. Happily the duration showed up in the feed! Now I needed to write a unit test that would pass and I would be able to submit a pull request.

Right about when I got that all figured out I saw an email come through from Bugzilla. It was in reference to a bug I had fixed. Weird. When I read it I was so disappointed because apparently I hadn’t fixed the bug correctly. I was supposed to add 30 minutes to the Event Assignment iCal feed for Air Mozilla but I had added 30 minutes to all of the feeds! Peter had reviewed it and somehow missed that I had done this and merged it in so he went ahead and fixed it the correct way. I was at least able to look at what he did and see what I should have done to begin with but it was still a bummer.

I decided this was an excellent time for a break so Wayne and I ran some errands and then came home and worked in the garden beds a bit. We had a tomatillo plant that had grown out of control but the tomatillos were tiny and not useable at all. It looked so much better when we got that all removed. I cut down our lime basil as well since it seemed done for the season. Our purple basil still looks amazing though so I topped it as well as the lemon basil. I’m curious to see how long they will last.

We were making grilled veggie and soy curl (terrible name for a really good thing!) sandwiches with chipotle mayo and a salad for dinner night. I got started on the mayo and the soy curl preparation. The curls just required re-hydrating with some boiling water and broth powder and the mayo is just Veganaise and chipotle peppers in adobo sauce whirred up in the food processor. I was craving chocolate chip cookies so I made a batch of those as well. Andrew finished up work and got a nice fire going for us. It made everyone miss Jason because he loves sitting by our wood stove with his plate of food.

Wayne was working on grilling the veggies when Alice arrived. She took over the kitchen and made a big salad. Taylor and Delaney showed up and brought two casserole dishes of vegan mac n’ cheese. It was one of the best dinners and I of course didn’t take a picture because I just wanted to eat. Tonight we had a small group. It was Taylor, Delaney, Spencer, John, Glenn, Alice and the five of us. We put on The Princess Bride because Spencer has never seen it and we couldn’t allow this to continue! He was pretty interested in the election results though so watched it sorta. Oh well, we tried our best.

As far as the election goes it looks like the Republicans have gained control of the Senate, Oregon legalized pot, Oregon GMO labeling is still too close to call, no driver cards for undocumented immigrants, we kept our Governor and Senator….. A mixed bag for sure.

Today I learned from Peter that when fixing a bug it’s typically 5 sec to write the code. 5 min to write the test. 5 hours to deploy the code. 5 days to have someone actually use it in real life.
