2015.02.08 – Taxes

We were meeting the accountant later today so we could turn in all of our paperwork. Like pretty much everyone, I am not a fan of tax time but was looking forward to getting it out of the way for sure. I spent the morning making sure I had everything gathered up that would be needed and filling out some preliminary paperwork.

Andrew and I met Emily at Ristretto Roasters. We hadn’t been there before. I’m sure there are hundreds of coffee shops in Portland we haven’t visited though. We went over everything and left all of our documents with her. She had other clients to meet with but I had a near full pot of Earl Grey tea to drink so Andrew and I moved to another table and talked about how lucky we are to live here. We were thinking about how things were in Arizona and how limited we felt. Lots of people call Havasu paradise but it certainly wasn’t to us.

I spent the remainder of the day just working on unit tests and watching the 3rd Harry Potter movie with Natale and Wayne. Wayne is still dragging so he took a little nap. I think he’s on the mend though!

After a dinner of Scrounge we watched some Dr. Who and then called it a night.

Today I learned that our accountant wants to be a programmer.

2015.02.07 – Game Night

Today seemed really busy but in a good way. I was up and out of the house early to get a haircut and then I stopped by Whole Foods to get ingredients to make a kale salad for dinner. After I got home Dave, Alena and the kids picked up Natale and I so we could join them for lunch at Via Chicago, a deep dish pizza place on Alberta. Natale and I got the vegan slices which were pre-made. Dave and Alena ordered a whole pizza for their family and I guess they take about 30 minutes to cook. Natale and I were pretty hungry so we ate ours. T

he pizza was good but would have been a lot better if it were freshly made. We sat there for quite some time waiting for the other pizza and then for everyone to eat. Meanwhile, Natale told me he was still really hungry. It would have been handy to know this a lot sooner! I ordered a pizza anyway and figured we could just take it home so we sat and waited some more. Once it was finally done we all headed home.

I spent a bit of time working on writing my tests for my Mozilla bug and then worked on the salad for dinner. We were going to game night at Dale and Miri’s house. Wayne was not feeling well at all so he opted to stay home and not share whatever he has.

Andrew, Natale and I got to Dale and Miri’s and everyone else arrived at just about the same time. Kronda and Jess and two friends of theirs (I’m horrible with names!) were the other guests. We had a ton of delicious food and then headed to the basement to play games. We played a bit of Apples to Apples with the whole group and then split into two groups of four while Miri got baby Michael to bed. We played games until after midnight and had a great time! They are going to host game night once per month and the three of us are definitely looking forward to it. Natale really enjoyed going and hanging out with everyone.

Today I learned how to play Ubongo.

2015.02.06 – Writing More Unit Tests

Today started out rainy. I was pretty happy for that. I love the rain! I got ready and went downstairs. Jordan and Natale were already down getting ready for school. Jordan said that Lauren had forgotten her soup for lunch and I know she wasn’t feeling well so I felt bad for her. It was pretty early though and I had plenty of time before we would be leaving so I asked Jordan if he wanted to go with me to surprise her with her lunch. He said sure so we drove over. She was SO happy!

Wayne dropped me off at Mozilla and it felt like a relief to be in the cozy office. I had a lot to work on. Refactoring some code, writing tests, fleshing out templates. I chatted with Peter a bit about some stuff I needed clarification on and then dove into writing my tests. I got some written. Yay! They all fail right now. Boo! Ah well.

Jordan got done at school so he rode the streetcar over and sat with me until Wayne picked us up. Katt came in and sat with us for a while too which was really nice. Once I got home I plopped on the couch and paid some bills before getting back to work. Natale was watching the first Harry Potter movie so that was a bit distracting but I managed to get stuff done.

We made a really good and easy dinner. Uncooked pasta, diced tomatoes, garlic, onion, basil, seasonings, veggie broth, a bit of olive oil. Toss it all in a pot and bring to a boil. Simmer about 10 – 15 minutes. Dinner!

After dinner Andrew helped me with my unit tests. I have two functioning tests now! I can’t wait until I can reason through this stuff as quickly as he does. Testing is super cool and I want to get really good at it.

Today I learned that our children’s school has nearly a 50% opt-out rate for vaccinations. Ugh!

2015.02.05 – Lots of Django

I’ve decided to work at the Mozilla office as much as possible from now on. I am getting so distracted at home with all that is going on there. Mozilla has provided such a nice space so there is no reason I shouldn’t utilize it.

Wayne dropped me off and then took Jordan to school. The office was so nice and quiet. I got all settled in, poured some tea, put on my headphones and some music and got to work. It’s amazing how much I got done!

Kronda came down in the afternoon and Christie was working in the office so the three of us worked together and talked about life and stuff. It was really nice and I still managed to get stuff accomplished. Awesome!

I had a meeting with Peter and he helped me figure out my many confusions. That helped me do even more. I can see how much stuff I don’t understand but at the same time I’m learning a ton. It’s such an interesting mix of feeling accomplished and incompetent all at the same time.

Wayne picked me up and I was barely home before it was time for Andrew and I to head to the PLUG meeting. Louis K was giving a talk about setting up a home mail server. It was interesting and I was able to keep working during the meeting. It sure doesn’t feel like work though. It feels like pure learning and I love learning.

We got home kind of late but Wayne had made Chick’n Noodle soup for dinner and it was still warm. The kids were all in bed so the house was pretty quiet. The three of us caught up on each other’s days for a bit before heading off to bed.

Today I learned how Django urls really work.

2015.02.04 – Burning Man 2015?

The whole house was up and getting ready early this morning. So much activity! I talked with Lauren, Jordan, Natale and Jayde before they each left for school/work and then grabbed my tea and got going. Andrew hasn’t been feeling well so he was dragging this morning. Lots of coughing, sneezing and he also had a headache. He still pushed through and started working.

I tried working on my project but it seemed my entire day was full of interruptions. Wayne was geared up and isolated in the yellow room removing the walls so we left him alone. Andrew was too sick to manage making lunch and wanted a burrito so I ran to get that, Lauren was having a horrible day so asked if I could heat up some food for her to grab, Jordan needed a ride home. I messaged Peter and told him I wouldn’t be making our afternoon meeting and he was fine with that so I didn’t stress too much. I can try again tomorrow.

Today was the Burning Man Directed Group Sale of tickets. All three of us signed up to purchase some so we can get enough tickets for the Playa Post Office. Our friend Nick is the organizer and had a terrible time getting enough tickets for his group. Maybe people aren’t as into Burning Man this year but we had no trouble getting two tickets each. It was weird. I don’t think we are going to be able to attend though. We are planning a two week road trip to Calgary so Andrew can participate in another OpenBSD Hackathon and that’s in July. I’m hoping to have a full-time job by then and asking for two weeks in July and another two weeks in August is probably not the best idea. We’ll get back one of these days though.

Today I learned that organizers would rather cancel an entire event than exclude a speaker that has been accused of a heinous crime. Seems common sense not to invite someone to speak at an event who is under current investigation.

2015.02.03 – Lots of Time, Little Progress

Today I got right to work on filling in my project structure. I set up the model but didn’t write a migration script just yet. I wanted to get the views built out but have to wrap my brain around what the views actually need to do. Peter sent me a sample POST request to get me started. That’s about the extent of my day. Lots of time spent on very few tasks. I guess this will improve as I learn and retain more. I hope!

Tonight was dinner night and we were having meatball subs. Wayne was tired and dirty from a day of more demo. He did find treasure though when he took down the false ceiling in the yellow room. The old fixture was still there! He went to take a shower so I got dinner started. Alice soon showed up and took over thank goodness. I had made some soy mozzarella cheese a couple of days prior knowing meatball subs were on the menu so that was handy. Tonight we had Dale, Miri, baby Michael, John, Spencer, Lauren, Sean and the six of us. The subs were great!

Today I learned that I screwed up on booking my flight to Montreal and won’t get there in time to talk at the Pycon Education Summit. My talk proposal wasn’t accepted or anything but now I’ll never know! At least I won’t have to worry about flights for next year I guess.

2015.02.02 – More Fun With JQuery

Andrew wasn’t feeling well so he slept in. That completely messed up Wayne and I and we slept in as well. Needless to say I hurried and made some tea and got right to work. It was another foggy morning but not cold enough for a fire.

I worked on filling out the project structure by creating all of the directories and files I’d need and then I poked around the existing library trying to get a better sense of how it all fits together. It still feels big with many parts and pieces but I’m starting to see the flow.

I had a Vidyo conference with Peter in the afternoon just to go over things. It helps a lot to talk stuff over often. We talked about names and how we envision the user experience. I hope he won’t mind me having tons of questions all the time!

Alena and Dave were bringing the kids over in the late afternoon so I hurriedly finished up the JQuery stuff I was working on. It’s SO interesting! Once the kids showed up, I was done working for the day.

We played until it was time to make dinner. I made something kid friendly so we had not-chicken strips, tater tots and asparagus. They all ate plenty so that was good. After dinner Tiberias picked a movie. He wanted to watch Frozen. I guess they hadn’t seen it before because both Tiberias and Rialla started crying when the snow monster appeared. Ooops! I wasn’t sure if I should turn it off or have them watch and see everything be resolved. We talked about it and decided to keep watching. Anya is too little to care much about the movie so we just played while the other two watched. The movie ended just about when Dave and Alena returned. The kids were super tired and ready to go home. It was really nice getting to watch them!

Today I learned how to use JQuery to control drawing on a canvas. Cool!

2015.02.01 – Gah! Seahawks!

I had more cooking to do today. I made buffalo chicken cup things and spinach dip so we had a TON of food to bring over. Spencer and John had a really nice crowd. My entire family but for Lauren and Sean because they never like to do anything, ever. Jason and Alice went over, Taylor and Delaney, Miri, Dale and baby Michael, Justin, Ryan and Angel. We ate and ate and ate. The game was excellent even though the Seahawks totally blew it at the end. We had a nice time.

Today I learned that you should really run the ball on second down when you are one yard away from winning the Super Bowl. Yep.
