2014.11.09 – Drum Retreat Day Two

I was back at it for another day of drum camp. We started our day with a percussion workshop where we were able to experiment with all manner of percussion instruments. We were a group of fourteen and there were plenty of things for all of us to mess with. We then just made some experimental sounds as a group and it came together pretty well. After we did that for quite some time we were separated into 7 groups and then had to pick a beat inside of a four beat measure of One and Two and Three and Four and. Ours was played on and Two…Three and if that makes sense. We played on just about everything you can imagine, kept our beats going and rotated around the instruments in a big circle. It was pretty cool.

When we were done with that we switched and our group went for lessons. I went upstairs to see what was going on and what rooms were available. Elizabeth was walking by so I asked what room she was in. She showed me and it was a room I hadn’t been in so I went with her. I got so lucky. It ended up being just the two of us for over an hour. She  was so wonderful! She helped me really move out of my comfort zone and had me just experiment with fills. I have such a hard time with them because there is no particular plan. They are supposed to be creative but I worry so much about screwing up or sounding awful so I would never try. She very patiently encouraged me to do it and it was great. We also had some meaningful conversations which made it an even better experience.

We broke for lunch and I ate upstairs with Shanna while she put together some worksheets. I then helped her tear down some kits. I skipped our group practice for the performance that night and helped tear down more kits instead. I feel very confident about how to tear down and set up a kit. I learned SO many useful things. All of us then did a long bucket line to load the equipment into a rental truck so it could be taken back to storage. With all of us in line we loaded out nearly 25 kits in about 15 minutes. Sweet!

With the kits all loaded it was time for our long break before the performance. I headed home since we live so close and it was cold in the house! I didn’t need to be back at camp until 5:30 so I got cozy under a blanket and Wayne started a fire. It was time to get going before I knew it but I was so warm and comfortable that I justified not returning. Bad me! I really felt like I had learned all I had hoped to and more though. I knew nobody would really miss me being there either and I wasn’t letting anyone down by not going back. See? Justify, justify, justify.

Alice and Jason came over and we had spaghetti for dinner. Lauren and Sean joined us which is very rare but it was nice to have them with us. We were going to watch a movie but Jason didn’t want to so he headed home to work. Andrew said he had too much work to do as well and didn’t have time for a movie so Alice, Wayne and I ended up sitting and talking for a while. She decided to go home and take a bath so Wayne and I picked a movie on Netflix called Stuck in Love. It was not bad at all.

Today I learned that I can be somewhat creative and make up some fills all by myself. Also that instead of saying “I’m sorry” one should say “Fuck you”. There is definitely context missing I know but trust me on that one.

2014.11.08 – Drum Retreat

Today is the Ladies Rock Camp drum retreat! I was a lot less nervous about going this time so that was good. I woke up kind of late though and was rushing around the house. When I was finally ready to go Andrew was going to go for a run so he walked me to the end of the street. He’s so sweet!

I went in and saw several people that I recognized from last year. Only one besides me had been a drummer at that camp. Apparently the drum positions fill up fast which is why they decided to have an all drum camp this time. There were so many incredible drummers there as instructors. From the email we were sent:

Shanna Doolittle
Shanna is the LRC Drum Retreat Program Director and assembly leader. Shanna drummed in The Haggard and currently drums in STLS. She has been involved with Rock Camp for Girls for just about forever.

JJ Jones
JJ combines a classic rock background with singer/songwriter, indie, and Americana music. She has performed with Lucy Wainwright Roche, Melissa Ferrick, and many more.

Caley Murray
Caley is a killer drummer. She is super involved in all things Rock Camp. She plays in a Heart cover band called Heart On. Whoa.

Katherine Paul
Katherine is a shredder. She plays drums in Genders.

Teri Quagliano
Teri IS drums. She plays in Lather, Rinse and Repeat.

Lisa Schonberg
Lisa is the unstoppable force behind Secret Drum Band and HITS. She played in Explode into Colors. She is possibly the most well known and kick ass drum instructors in Portland. She helped found Tom Tom Magazine, a publication dedicated to showcasing female drummers.

Heather Treadway
Heather is a polyrhythm mastermind. She shreds on congas. She played in Explode into Colors and currently plays in HITS.

Elizabeth Venable
Elizabeth plays drums in Sad Horse. Picture a combination of Taz, Keith Moon, and Animal from the Muppets, then multiply that by a million.

There were also guest musicians that were there to play with us. I was pretty happy to see Nsayi Matingou, who is an incredible drummer, there with a bass guitar.

We all started with breakfast and then Shanna went over how things were going to go.  There were 29 campers so we split into two groups. One group went off to have lessons with the various instructors while the rest of us stayed with Shanna and Lisa in an equipment workshop. We learned how to properly set up a kit, how to change a drum head (you can and should stand on a new one to get it settled), and how to tune a drum. It was very informative!

We then switched and went with different instructors for lessons. Elizabeth was with my group. She’s wonderful! She was my instructor last year. We learned some fills and some new beats and then it was lunch time. I walked down to New Seasons although I should have just gone home for food. Oh well. When we came back it was time to jam wherever we wanted to jam. I ended up in Nsayi’s room with two other drummers and it was amazing! I was pretty nervous at first but once I got into it I just played and tried different stuff here and there. It felt good to experiment. I rotated to a different room and it wasn’t as good but not horrible. I couldn’t really feel what the bass player was doing so I went down to the basement or drumgeon as we like to call it and ended up in a room with the guitar player from my band last year, Stacy and another woman I just met, Cameron. Lisa came into our room and helped us learn a surf beat and fill. It was SO much fun!

It was time for the day to end but it felt like it just flew by. This was so different from my experience last year. I had never played the drums before and we were new to Portland so I knew nobody at camp. I remember being so incredibly stressed out. I was trying to figure out how to get out of returning but each band had one drummer and there were seven bands. If I quit I would kind of screw my band so I sucked it up and went back the next day and it was amazing what a good nights sleep did. I felt so much better the next day and I played better too. By the time our showcase rolled around on Sunday I wasn’t too worried at all. We played on stage at Mississippi Studios in front of cameras and a live, paying audience but the lights were so bright I couldn’t see anyone. It was a ton of fun! It was one of those life changing things too. I did something I really didn’t think I could or would ever do.

Anyway, Andrew showed up to walk me home because he’s just too wonderful. I told him what a great day I had the entire way home. When we got there, Alice and Wayne were making dinner. Glenn was over as well. We were having a wonderful stir fry and then were going to watch Maleficent. Andrew started a fire, we had dinner and while Andrew was making popcorn I changed into comfy clothes. Jason ran home for some ice cream and brought back these awesome bags Alice has. You heat them in the microwave and they are warm and wonderful. We all got cozy on the couch and stuffed ourselves with popcorn while we watched the movie. I really enjoyed it!

Today I learned that it isn’t so scary to just try something different on the drums. Messing up isn’t the end of the world.

2014.11.07 – Podcast

I woke up early, got showered and dressed, and gathered up my computer, headset and tea so I could migrate to the attic. It would be sure to be quiet there so would be perfect for recording the podcast. Paige with the Portland chapter of Women Who Code would be interviewing me. I was a little nervous but not terribly nervous. Less nervous than I thought I would be anyway. Paige called and there was someone else there too. She told me her name but I was definitely nervous enough that I forgot what it was. This would be the very first podcast for all three of us. They asked me questions, we talked about stuff and then we were done. Easy, but I have no idea how it will turn out. I’ll probably hate it. I actually don’t even know what it’s called or where I might find it. Ha!

Spencer messaged me and invited me to go run errands with him. He’s off on Friday and we were talking about lunch anyway so I thought it would be nice to go hang out with him for a while. He picked me up and we drove out to Clackamas where he works for a flooring store. Their showroom is beautiful! We then stopped at Trader Joe’s and Costco and then went to Native Foods for lunch. I love this date cake with caramel sauce that they have. I ordered the crispy chicken, bacon, avocado club and the date cake. “We no longer carry the date cake.” Of course you don’t. Maybe this is all a sign that I am too obsessed with vegan dessert. I ordered the apple cake with a side of caramel sauce (they still carry this for some reason but I am not complaining because it’s really good). Spencer had a bunch more things to do and we were having a really great day. The fog lifted and the sky was beautiful blue. The smell of burning wood was in the air. Ahhhh I love it here!

I missed my opportunity to go to co-working though. It’s someone’s brilliant idea to gather a group of people who typically work from home and meet at a coffee shop or other venue to work together and get in some social time. I was definitely looking forward to it but there will be other days and it was really wonderful to hang out with Spencer.

Spencer dropped me off at home so I went looking for my guys. Wayne was busy doing some electrical work in the basement and Andrew was busy working. Andrew wanted to go see Citizenfour so was trying to get done. I decided to leave the two of them to their tasks and look at this bug of mine instead. I worked on the code and the test but my test kept failing and I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. I messed with it until it was time to go to the movie. Wayne didn’t want to go and Natale couldn’t join us because the theater is 21 and up after 19:00. Alice was on her own because Jason wouldn’t be home from his trip until late so she, Wayne, and Natale decided to have pizza and watch a movie.

Andrew and I drove downtown and had a really difficult time finding a place to park. We finally found a spot several blocks away and walked up to the theater. There was a line and I was just hoping our movie wasn’t a popular choice. Unfortunately it was and the movie was sold out. We cut our losses and called Wayne to let him know we would be joining in on the pizza/movie. We ate over at Alice’s and watched Contagion. The pizza was excellent, the move was pretty good and Jason returned home just before it ended so all was well.

Today I learned that people in Portland are interested in movies that wouldn’t draw a crowd in Lake Havasu. It’s great but we need to buy tickets much earlier!

2014.11.06 – Next Bug Please

It was rainy and windy when I got up. Andrew was going downtown but I had stuff to do at home. Mainly paying some bills and going over some questions I would be asked the following day during a podcast I would be a guest on. I hadn’t told anyone about it because it isn’t something I have ever done and if it turns out to be a disaster nobody has to know.

I also got an email regarding the Urban Airship internship application I had submitted. They wanted to schedule an interview with me. I wrote them back and told them about my availability the previous day and was just waiting to get confirmation of a scheduled day and time. It appears they are interviewing any of us Ascenders that applied. There are only two spots available so we will see what happens.

I looked over the podcast questions and made some terse comments just as mental reminders in case I get nervous and forget what I was saying. One of the questions is “What are you most proud of?”. Huh….good question! I really had to think about this because the things I am most proud of I can take little credit for. I am ridiculously proud of my children and my husbands, proud of this life I was so fortunate fall into. I don’t really think that was the intent of the question though. I finally settled on my tenacity. I’m proud of my ability to try, try and try some more.

I decided to tackle this bug since I had just worked on duration as well as iCal. I started looking over the code to figure out where I needed to change stuff when I remembered the online Haskell class I am signed up for. Ugh! I had to be significantly behind. I logged in and there was a ton of work to do so I ended up spending most of my day watching lectures and doing homework. The class is really boring though. I prefer a class where I can test out stuff but this one is just a bunch of multiple choice quizzes. I’m thinking of un-enrolling and using my time for something more beneficial. There is probably a decent tutorial out there.

Andrew and I had the PLUG meeting to go to so we headed to PSU. The talk was about using OwnCloud to host your own cloud server instead of using Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. It was very interesting and I think we might try it.

Everyone usually meets at Lucky Lab NW afterward but I wasn’t up for the one vegan thing they have so Andrew and I opted to go to Veggie Grill. I hadn’t been in a while and was looking forward to trying some of their new menu items and of course I’d need a chocolate pudding parfait. They are so good! We ordered the new banh mi sandwich,  an order of not-chicken strips, and my pudding. “Sorry we don’t have the pudding anymore.” What?!?!?! The only reasonable explanation for this is that Veggie Grill hates me. Yup. Oh well, I guess I’ll have the carrot cake. “I’m so sorry. We are all out of that today. How about a free cookie?” Whatever. Give me the cookie….grumble….grumble….grumble. First world problems for sure.

Today I learned about FreeNAS and ZFS

2014.11.05 – A Quiet Day

It was a cloudy but dry day so far. Wayne and I would be picking up Kronda and Jess from the airport in the afternoon so we decided to head to Costco for some things we needed before we went to the airport. It was amazingly uncrowded there! That was perfect though because we didn’t have a ton of time. We got most everything we needed and of course some things we didn’t and took the short drive to the airport. The flight was right on time and it was really nice to see their happy faces. They even brought us some gifts!

After dropping off Kronda and Jess we ran a few more errands and came back home. We were both starving so made a quick lunch and then I headed to my laptop, checked email, made some appointments, did a bit of banking and then started working on my bug.

Yesterday I moved on from trying to get my test video to show up on the Roku. That left very little to actually do for this bug fix so I made the code change and wrote a unit test for it. The tests passed and it looked good so I submitted a pull request. Peter wrote back right away with an addition he wanted so I quickly did that, modified the test and got the code pushed up again. Travis was happy and so was Peter so everything got merged. It’s amazing how one seemingly simple task, I didn’t really have to do to fix the bug, sidelined my progress for so long! I still want to figure out how to make the Roku display my video though.

Natale was sitting downstairs with me so I thought I would try to engage him in something fun and programming related. I had checked out codecombat.com several months ago and it was a great idea but didn’t have very many levels. We brought it up again and it definitely had improved. Still not a ton of levels but enough to maybe get him interested in learning some JavaScript. I got him started and only helped him when he felt stuck. He seemed to enjoy it.

We loved dinner so much yesterday that we decided to have it again. We had just enough left over to feed everyone. Alice joined us and then we went to her house and watched Jurassic Park. I sure didn’t remember Samuel L. Jackson being in it!

Today I learned the airport has food carts.

2014.11.04 – Election Day

I was up early and at my Roku bug again. I spent quite some time trying to get an event to show up on my test channel but it just wasn’t working at all. Peter suggested I just verify the event with a duration shows up locally on my laptop. I brought up the feed on my computer but the sample video didn’t have a duration of course. That meant I got to spend a good amount of time learning about databases. I haven’t really spent a lot of time messing with them but it wasn’t terribly awful to figure out how to log in to it and add a duration to my event. Happily the duration showed up in the feed! Now I needed to write a unit test that would pass and I would be able to submit a pull request.

Right about when I got that all figured out I saw an email come through from Bugzilla. It was in reference to a bug I had fixed. Weird. When I read it I was so disappointed because apparently I hadn’t fixed the bug correctly. I was supposed to add 30 minutes to the Event Assignment iCal feed for Air Mozilla but I had added 30 minutes to all of the feeds! Peter had reviewed it and somehow missed that I had done this and merged it in so he went ahead and fixed it the correct way. I was at least able to look at what he did and see what I should have done to begin with but it was still a bummer.

I decided this was an excellent time for a break so Wayne and I ran some errands and then came home and worked in the garden beds a bit. We had a tomatillo plant that had grown out of control but the tomatillos were tiny and not useable at all. It looked so much better when we got that all removed. I cut down our lime basil as well since it seemed done for the season. Our purple basil still looks amazing though so I topped it as well as the lemon basil. I’m curious to see how long they will last.

We were making grilled veggie and soy curl (terrible name for a really good thing!) sandwiches with chipotle mayo and a salad for dinner night. I got started on the mayo and the soy curl preparation. The curls just required re-hydrating with some boiling water and broth powder and the mayo is just Veganaise and chipotle peppers in adobo sauce whirred up in the food processor. I was craving chocolate chip cookies so I made a batch of those as well. Andrew finished up work and got a nice fire going for us. It made everyone miss Jason because he loves sitting by our wood stove with his plate of food.

Wayne was working on grilling the veggies when Alice arrived. She took over the kitchen and made a big salad. Taylor and Delaney showed up and brought two casserole dishes of vegan mac n’ cheese. It was one of the best dinners and I of course didn’t take a picture because I just wanted to eat. Tonight we had a small group. It was Taylor, Delaney, Spencer, John, Glenn, Alice and the five of us. We put on The Princess Bride because Spencer has never seen it and we couldn’t allow this to continue! He was pretty interested in the election results though so watched it sorta. Oh well, we tried our best.

As far as the election goes it looks like the Republicans have gained control of the Senate, Oregon legalized pot, Oregon GMO labeling is still too close to call, no driver cards for undocumented immigrants, we kept our Governor and Senator….. A mixed bag for sure.

Today I learned from Peter that when fixing a bug it’s typically 5 sec to write the code. 5 min to write the test. 5 hours to deploy the code. 5 days to have someone actually use it in real life.

2014.11.03 – Air Mozilla and Roku

I tried to stay snuggled up in bed but my eyes were ready to be open so I got up and headed for my tea. I have the best intentions to start exercising again each morning but when it comes time to do it I don’t want to. I keep thinking I will come up with a schedule of exercise, drum practice, French lessons and coding but I seem to only fit in the coding so far.

So naturally I skipped everything and headed for my laptop. I have this bug I have been looking at for quite some time. It involves adding the event duration for events on the Air Mozilla Roku channel. We have a Roku device we hadn’t ever opened because we don’t really watch much television but I needed to mess with it so I got it all hooked up and then enabled developer mode on it. Once that was done I was able to side-load the Air Mozilla channel on to it from the repository. Neat! I could then telent into the Roku and watch the debugger as I navigated around in the channel. Cool! All of this is completely new to me so it took some time to grasp exactly what was going on but once I did it was pretty uncomplicated.

I decided to make my own test channel and see if I could side-load it as well and get it to come up on the box. I had to create the proper directory structure but only needed a couple of files to make it actually work. I zipped them up and loaded the zip file. The Roku automatically reloaded and bam! There was my channel. Not very exciting at all but it was very interesting to see how it’s done.

Once I was done playing with that I went back to the bug. I needed some sample video to add to an event. Luckily Peter had a sample video and the documentation for adding it already written up so I followed the instructions and could get it playing on my laptop but it was not being seen in the channel.xml file. I messed with it for quite some time but it was time for dinner and a movie with Alice afterward. Jason is in Nova Scotia this week.

Wayne and Alice made yummy chili dogs and then we watched Lady in the Water. It was really strange and funny. I think we all enjoyed it.

Today I learned how to create a test Roku channel.

2014.11.02 – Home Again!

I slept well and loved the extra hour of rest due to daylight saving time even though I think it’s the dumbest thing ever and should be done away with. The lack of daylight saving time is the only good thing about Arizona! Ok, maybe that’s not fair. Arizona also has many beautiful highways and a pretty decent speed limit, both of which help you to escape more quickly.

Aaaaanyway, we checked out of the hotel and headed out to look for breakfast. Andrew spotted Carl and invited him to join us. We found a bagel and coffee shop not too far away and headed there. We got our breakfast and sufficient amounts of caffeine and then sat and had a nice talk while we started our morning.

We headed over to the conference since it was about to begin, checked in and took our seats. It wasn’t long before I got a message from Jennifer saying she was ready to work on my cover letter so I grabbed my tea and laptop and found her. I couldn’t believe she was willing to help me but I sure wasn’t going to turn her down!

She started by asking me some questions and I also showed her my resume. I had a really difficult time trying to talk about me being good at anything. It just felt so weird. I’m new and don’t really know much of anything so I can’t really say I’m great at this or great at that. Jennifer gave up on asking me to do that and read over my resume. I handed her my laptop and she started typing away. The next thing I know I’m reading this awesome sounding letter! It wasn’t full of boast or anything. It just talked about my strengths and talked about my excitement to be a part of the internship. I hope I can learn something from this.

It was lunch time before we knew it so I ventured off to grab our lunches as well as Andrew’s. There were our happy boxes with our names on them! Two vegan and one gluten free. I was confident they would be correct today because the kitchen manager was really unhappy about the mistakes yesterday. But of course they were wrong again. The first thing I saw in mine was a bag of Doritos just like yesterday and Jennifer had regular bread. Off to the kitchen we went and just like yesterday the kitchen manager was mad and they fixed it but really I don’t think they actually cared.

Andrew and I listened to a few more talks and then a big group photo was taken. It was about time for us to hit the road though so we packed up our stuff and headed out. The drive to the airport was uneventful as was returning the rental and finding our way to security. There was practically nobody in line which was really nice and since we were traveling light we’d be through in no time!

I waited for my bag and noticed they set it aside. Hmmm ok. They of course set Andrew’s aside as well but they always do. They started searching mine and I told them it was just my multi-tool. It has scissors but it’s totally TSA compliant (don’t even get me started on the stupid, ridiculous, waste of time and money TSA) so I wasn’t worried and we were plenty early so search away! I told the guy where it was so he wouldn’t have to take every single thing out of my bag and he found it pretty quickly. He asked if I wanted to throw it away and I told him it was legal to have. He then opened up a knife. Huh. I stared at it trying really hard to see scissors but it was still a blade. Huh. Apparently I had grabbed the wrong Leatherman. Oops! Well, I made several trips with it before anyone finally figured it out. It was pretty inexpensive so I let them keep it and we were on our way.

We sat in the terminal and Andrew read his book while I caught up on my blog. It was quiet for a while and then more and more people started to show up so I kept getting distracted. I love watching people so I did a lot of that. Finally it was time for our flight. The plane was fairly empty and we had our own row. I worked on my blog, ( It’s really long but hey, I was stuck on a plane. Skim!) read my book for a while and in no time we were landing. Wayne was there to get us and we were happy to be home! Hopefully we can just stay here for a while 🙂

Today I learned about a creepy cult I don’t even want to mention by name for fear of inadvertently promoting it. Super creepy though!

2014.11.01 – MeetBSD California 2014

Up soooooo early again on a Saturday! Andrew and I had very quickly packed the night before and since this was just an overnight trip we were traveling light. We each just packed some clothes and toiletries in our laptop bags. Light! Poor Wayne dragged out of bed so he could drive us to the airport. He’s a good man for sure!

The airport was really busy for it being so early but as usual, security was a breeze. Well except for Andrew having his bag searched but this happens every time so we plan for it. Our flight was uneventful. I shifted between reading and napping and we were there in no time. We picked up our super fancy rental car (not really) and made our way toward super fancy San Jose (not really). We hadn’t had breakfast so Andrew tried to Yelp (this is a verb, correct?) us some vegan food. If we thought finding vegan in SF was a pain this was even worse! He did find a doughnut shop, Psycho Donuts that claimed to have vegan options. Well who doesn’t love fried carbs and sugar? We assumed it was going to be much like Voodoo so didn’t have high hopes.

We navigated our way there and wandered around searching for it. It was somewhere attached to a parking garage but we didn’t see it. We asked a woman working in a flower shop and she told us it was very expensive, showed us where Safeway was, told us they probably had cookies and then pointed us to the doughnut shop. We chose Psycho over sanity though. Not only was it attached to a parking garage, it was in the entrance to a movie theater. Yup it was pretty much trying to be Voodoo but their vegan selection was not much of a selection. We each got one and ate them on the way back to the car. They were so-so but it was something to hold us over anyway.

Back on the freeway and headed for the conference. It was being held at the Western Digital headquarters. We found the entrance and headed in, got our badges, said hello to people we knew and headed for the talk. It was a one track conference and was already underway. We listened to talks about BSD something something something until lunch.

We were sitting with our friend Carl so I left Andrew to talk while I went to get our food. They had little signs for everything and I was very happy to see one that said vegan. Wow, they even had stickers with our names on ours! How nice to be taken care of. Oh, so naive. I opened up my lunch and immediately saw a bag of Doritos, and a packet of mayo, and cream cheese on the sandwich. Well then. I opened Andrew’s and it was the same.

I found the organizer, Denise, and asked her about it. I told her I would be happy to go get us something but I didn’t want to throw away our untouched food. She was not happy about the mistake. There was also another woman who had her food messed up as well. She requested gluten free but hers definitely had gluten. The kitchen manager came out, found out what we needed and said she would be back with the correct food for all of us. Whew!

Denise and the other woman, Jennifer, began talking about diversity at conferences. Denise was asking Jennifer what she thought she could do to bring more women to the MeetBSD conferences. Jennifer began making suggestions and Denise seemed pretty open to hearing about them. Since I was standing there I put in my two cents and also mentioned that I had just finished the Ascend Project. Jennifer said something like, “Oh my gosh! You were in Ascend?! I was talking with Lukas about it at Grace Hopper and wow she made it happen! How was it?” I told her how incredible it was and how lucky I feel to have been a participant. I pointed her to the ascendproject.org website so she could read our blogs and course materials.

We talked for a bit longer until our food came. Everything was great and the kitchen manager assured us our food would be correct the next day. Awesome! I was really enjoying talking with Jennifer and asked if she wanted to go sit with us for lunch but she was heading home. Darn! She would be back tomorrow though. Yay!

I went back and told Andrew all about the diversity discussion and how I had met this really nice woman who had to leave. We ate and then listened to another talk or two. It was a good time to go check in to our fancy hotel (not really) so we drove the short distance. Apparently there was a huge wedding going on and they were all staying at the hotel. There were wedding party people everywhere! The were really loud too but they all looked great. I checked us in and we headed up to our room.

We got out of the elevator and I wish I had taken a picture but we were at the end of the most ridiculously long hallway and our room was at the other end! We trudged down there and opened the door. I could immediately tell people had been smoking in there. Ugh! Back down to the front desk. “Can we get a different room? Ours has definitely been smoked in.” Blank stare and then, “They are all supposed to be non-smoking” “Yeah well someone didn’t get the memo.” She was really pretty nice about it and found us another room…..still at the end of the long hallway. This room was much better.

I stayed at the hotel while Andrew went back to the conference for the last talk. I worked on my stupid resume and cover letter with no luck at all. Such a huge pain in the ass. How am I supposed to sell myself? I was so frustrated so I sent a tweet about it. Not one but two awesome women offered to help me. Jennifer was one of them! Wow, I just met her and she was willing to spend time with me the next day during the conference helping me out! Our friend Vicky also said she would help. I felt so relieved so I set it aside and searched for a place to have dinner.

I was pretty worried about this because nothing really came up on Yelp. I changed my tactic though and searched for vegetarian instead of vegan. I figured most anything vegetarian could probably be made vegan. This worked out really well! I found a couple of wonderful sounding vegetarian Vietnamese restaurants. I told Andrew about this and he invited some others from the conference to join us. We went to dinner with Michael, Will, and someone whose name I have forgotten. Sorry, really funny, nice guy from SF!

We ate at Bo De Vietnamese and it was excellent! Not a soul that worked there spoke any English so we could only order food by the menu number and we couldn’t ask any questions about additions, heat level and so on. It was all vegetarian with many mock meat dishes. The guys that went with us were so confused! I told them it was mock meat and none of them freaked out so that was good 🙂 I got the Spicy Crispy Lemongrass Chicken and Andrew got the Pickled Mustard Chicken. His sounded awful so I told him I wasn’t going to share mine or try any of his but when our food came his was like this giant bowl of delicious smelling soup! Mine was really good and spicy but I definitely wanted to taste his so we swapped after we both ate a bit. It was delicious! Everyone got wonderful looking food and I wish I had thought to take pictures. We all loved everything we got so I was relieved. I never know how strangers will react to eating a vegan meal.

We headed back to the hotel for the MeetBSD party. It had already gotten started and the music was SO loud! I never understand why anyone does this at a tech event. There wasn’t a person there who was going to dance. Everyone was nerd talking and it was really difficult to do over the music so many of us migrated out to the lobby.

Andrew and I talked with our friend, Carl. He’s going to propose to his African girlfriend and he’s doing the traditional thing with a dowry and courtship. It was so interesting! He is American and has no idea how it all works so his soon-to-be fiancee’s brother will be guiding him. He’s really nervous but he’s a wonderful man and he deserves to be happy. I’m ridiculously excited for him and this new life he will have!

It was pretty late and we were tired from our early and busy day so we headed up to the room. I have to say for a not very fancy hotel the bed was SO comfortable. It had a pillow top, a cozy comforter and the pillow was perfect! Better than mine at home.

Today I learned that traditionally the Congolese dowry requires giving the father of the bride a handgun but a laptop will suffice.

2014.10.31 – Halloween 2014

I was up and ready early this morning so I could drop Kronda and Jess off at the airport. Wayne was up too and agreed to go with me. Jayde was up and super excited about Halloween. She was doing her hair and makeup and I was so impressed when she came downstairs. She took care of her entire costume. She is very into anything creepy.

We got them dropped off in a timely manner and headed home. Taylor was supposed to make vegan Mac n’ Cheese to go with burgers for dinner so Wayne and I stopped at a couple of stores to get buns and toppings.

By the time we made it home it was nearly time for Friday lunch with Spencer! We went to lunch together just about every Friday in Lake Havasu and began again when he and John moved to Portland but Friday lunch was put on hold while I was in Ascend and we were out of town last weekend. Finally a Friday lunch again! Spencer came to our house and the four of us, Andrew, Wayne, Spencer, and I went to Handsome Pizza. We hadn’t been in a while and yes, we had pizza for dinner the night before but it’s pizza. Yum! It was excellent! They really know how to do the toppings and crust just right.

Wayne wanted to go to Pier 1 Imports and get some plates and bowls to replace those that had broken over the last year. Spencer was off so he came with us. We wandered all around looking at all of their interesting stuff. Luckily the plates we needed were on sale!

When we got home Natale also arrived with his friend Charlie. She was born in Portland but is new to his school this year. The three of us sat down to watch a movie Natale has been wanting me to see called Cyberbully. Jason came over with Ladybug about halfway through the movie and stayed to watch it. It was definitely not his kind of movie but his comments kept me laughing.

We hadn’t heard from Taylor and it was about dinner time. Wayne messaged him and I guess he didn’t realize he scheduled dinner with us on Halloween. He had other plans. Oh well, we had plenty of food anyway. Alice wasn’t home yet because she was dealing with a potential ebola incident (it’s not ebola) so Wayne started getting stuff ready. Once she did show up she was busy on a bunch of phone calls with various people from various agencies. She was definitely in her element and it was a lot of fun to see how happy she was doing her job.

It was raining this year but we had a ton of trick-or-treaters. That is some parental dedication right there! Jayde went with her friend Estelle and Natale and Charlie were supposed to go with another friend of theirs but he was late so they ended up just hanging out with Charlie manning our door.

Between Alice’s phone calls and our busy door, dinner was a bit chaotic but it was good. After all of the activity subsided we decided to watch Paul. It was stupid but really enjoyable. It was getting late and we had to be up early again in the morning so Andrew and I could fly back to San Francisco and then drive to a conference in San Jose so it was bedtime for us.

Today I learned something I’m sure.
